Graceful Ascent

Courtyards are a lovely exterior feature, but when it comes to the interior of a house, there is nothing so capable of setting the tone as an entryway and staircase. The typical staircase is nondescript and boring, but a curved staircase adds instant elegance and refinement. When it's a curved staircase such as this, the tone created is both romantic and regal, yet cool and light. This stairway is not oppressive; it doesn't look self-involved. Yet it does maintain an air of distinction through the use of some subtly unique characteristics. Take a look at that scrollwork!

A Royal Entrance

Another view of the courtyard below. This courtyard was really made for the rich and famous--or at least for the movies. But isn't it lovely?

Sitting by the fountain in the courtyard. . .

the cat lazily washed its paws in the sun.

This courtyard lacks the green carpet of the previous example, but it still provides the space, fresh air, sun, and sanctuary that come from being able to step out-of-doors without setting foot outside your own four walls. It's a lovely thought.
